Summery fun at Wilson Botanic Park

Thumbnail

Be it at home, at the beach or in a park, there’s nothing quite like hanging outdoors on a warm summer evening.

Cue stage left: the beautiful Wilson Botanic Park Berwick, hosting various family entertainment options over the warmer months.

Only minutes from the Monash Freeway, the beauty of Wilson Botanic Park Berwick begins before you even get to the car park: an oak-lined driveway is a prelude to thirty-nine hectares of natural wonder that lie beyond.

The picnic areas are the perfect place for a barbecue and the playground is popular with kids, while many enjoy the wonderful walking tracks around the picturesque lakes of this historical quarry site.

Listen

For Casey’s music lovers, there’s “Saturday Night Live Music at the Park”. Bring your loved ones, a picnic, a blanket or camping chair and gather beside the lake as some of the most talented local musicians serenade us.

The event runs from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm and features some serious talent, such as:

  • Twice Shy - all your favourite classics from the sixties to now
  • Chatham Manor - rockin’ pop covers with a Disney song or two
  • Duo101 - dropping delectable acoustic rock hits

For more information visit the Saturday Night Live Facebook event page.

See also: ‘Valentine’s Day – Live Music at the Park’, an evening concert on Friday 14 February featuring Andrew Williams. Start the evening by treating that special someone to a romantic picnic (food trucks from 5:30 pm) and then chill to live music by former TV star Andrew Williams (Melrose Place, E-Street, Neighbours).

Watch

Rather watch a movie? Then do it the best way: outdoors!

Wilson Botanic Park outdoor movie nights are the stuff of local legend, as the amphitheatre comes alive with people and Hollywood’s favourite family flicks beamed to the huge, inflatable screen. There’s plenty of space for your dog (and your kids). You can skip the sandwiches—there are food trucks in attendance, ready to cure any hunger pangs.

NOTE - this event has now closed.

Move

What’s that; you’d prefer something more active? One minute, let’s see what we can conjure up for you…

Sh’bam! Here’s the perfect thing!

Described as “a fun-loving, insanely addictive dance workout”, Sh’bam is definitely the coolest way to get active and blow of some steam.

Bring the family out for an energetic ‘Sh'bam in the Park’ session among the trees. You can get your groove on every Friday throughout summer, from 4.30 pm. It’s free to participate and great fun for the whole family, check out the Facebook page.

Volunteer

If dancing isn’t your thing, then how about the monthly working bee? Volunteers are welcome to help out with park maintenance, and it’s also a great way to learn more about the gardens and meet others who love the park. Just turn up on the third Saturday of each month from 9.00 am – 1.00 pm. A barbecue lunch is provided to helpers.

A natural wonder right here in Casey

Wilson Botanic Park is also a sanctuary to many native birds; recently there have been sightings of a family of Tawny Frogmouths and a Powerful Owl, eating its prey.

If you’d like to catch a glimpse, then you’ll be excited to learn that, perched on the edge of the Basalt Lake, ‘The Birdhide’ provides a covert retreat for bird watching. Also, a member of the Bird Observers Club leads a bird walk in March and October.
