Overview

The Safe Around Schools program outlines the shared responsibility of road safety by council, schools, parents, and students. The program services 98 Schools from January 2024 in the City of Casey.

Getting children to school safely is everyone’s job!

Think before you park, drive, drop off and pick up.
Be careful around schools, follow signs and obey the road rules.
Slow down and be alert! Children can be unpredictable.

School crossings

VicRoads and Council share responsibility for school crossings, including establishing the crossing, training and employing school crossing supervisors and supplying flags, uniforms and equipment.

School Crossings are only operational when flags are displayed. During this time, drivers must stop if a child or adult is about to cross or is crossing the road, even if there is no Crossing Supervisor. Drivers must stop if a handheld “Stop” sign is being displayed. Drivers must proceed only when all children and adults, including the School Crossing Supervisor, are clear of the crossing.

When crossing flags or flashing lights are not displayed, pedestrians must give way to passing road traffic.

School crossings are the safest place for children and adults to cross the road.

Casey’s School Crossing Supervisors are trained to help children cross the road safely.
Use the School Crossing. It is the safest place for children and adults to cross the road.
Be respectful to the School Crossing Supervisor; they are there for you.

Drivers

Drivers must not overtake a vehicle stopping/stopped at the School Crossing.
Keep the School Crossing Clear. Do not stop your car at the crossing. Blocking the crossing is not only against the law but also dangerous for everyone.
Drivers must stop if a child or adult is about to cross or is crossing while flags are displayed, even if there is no Crossing Supervisor.
Drivers must stop if a handheld “Stop” sign is displayed.
Drivers must proceed only when all children and adults, including the School Crossing Supervisor, are clear of the crossing.
Drivers must approach at a speed slow enough to stop safely, if necessary. Drivers should always watch out for children near schools.

Pedestrians

Pedestrians must wait behind the yellow line at the crossing.
Your School Crossing Supervisor will stop the traffic.
Your School Crossing Supervisor will go out to the middle of the road.
Listen for two blasts of their whistle.
Walk in front of the School Crossing Supervisor to the other side of the road.
Walk, never run. Remember to get off your bike.
Balls must not be bounced while crossing the road.

Drop off and pick up zones

A school drop off and pick up zone is a special place to drop off or quickly pick up your child from school. School drop-off and pick-up are the busiest times of the day. Many children, parents and cars are all trying to get to the same place at the same time – with limited car parking.

Move as far up as you can
Child not there? Drive out and come back
Do not park here and wait

NO PARKING sign means that the area is a drop off/pick up zone. The times may differ at your school, but the rules are the same. Fines can apply if the signs are not followed.

Reduce traffic around schools

To make the roads safer and reduce road congestion, try the following:

Walk or ride to school. Use your Walk to School map to find the best route to your school. You can request a map if your school doesn’t have one.
Park a little further away from school and enjoy a short walk - avoiding traffic and parking pressure. Many schools have nearby sporting Reserves with parking that families can use during the week.
Carpool with a friend.

How to reduce traffic

Avoid drop-off and pick-up delays. Consider alternatives to driving and help children to be more active.

As part of the Safe Around Schools program, Casey Council provides a dedicated service to support schools as a safe precinct for the community. We can provide:

Physical and digital resources for sharing with parents
Observation visits to gather data and understand issues
Mapping of safe walking route options for families
Signage for Drop off Pick Up Zones
Activity sheets and resources for students
On-site visit to engage with families and students around specific concerns
Presentations to parents, transition & orientation events, student leaders and the School Council
