Council's commitment

The City of Casey is committed to promoting opportunities for engagement, support, advocacy and partnerships for our LGBTIQA+ community.

The City of Casey released its inaugural Rainbow Action Plan in June 2024. The plan is explicitly linked to the Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2021-25.

Rainbow Action Plan

The City of Casey’s Rainbow Action Plan marks a significant milestone in advancing LGBTIQA+ inclusion within our community.

Our vision is "To create a City of Casey where LGBTIQA+ people can feel safe to be who they are and can thrive wherever they live, work, or play."

There are three key priority areas within the plan. You can learn about them below and access the full plan.

Inclusion 

More LGBTIQA+ inclusive events and opportunities to come together.

Inclusion is not just a goal; it is a fundamental principle that drives our unity and progress. Embracing inclusion means creating spaces where individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions feel welcomed, respected, and heard. It involves recognising and valuing the perspectives, contributions, and diverse experiences of each member of the community. Inclusive practices prioritise accessibility, equity, and representation - it ensures that everyone has a voice and a seat at the table. When we foster a culture of inclusion, the LGBTIQA+ community thrives.

Leadership

Council works with the community to build visibility, participation, and safety in Casey.

Leadership is about fostering inclusion, promoting the wellbeing of the community and leading positive change. It allows us to advocate for equity, diversity, and acceptance, creating an environment where individuals feel valued and respected regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. Leadership works towards dismantling systemic barriers and promotes equality. Leadership is demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity through change, through words and through action.

Safety

I am safe here

Safety is important for the LGBTIQA+ community due to the unique challenges they often face. Historically, many members of the LGBTIQA+ community have experienced discrimination and exclusion, simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This leads to social isolation, vulnerability, and fear. When we focus on safety, we consider physical safety, emotional safety, access to resources and support and promotion of inclusion and acceptance. When LGBTIQA+ individuals feel safe, they are more likely to participate in and contribute to our community.

Pride in our future: Victoria's LGBTIQA+ strategy 2022-32

Pride in our future: Victoria’s first whole-of-government LGBTIQA+ strategy outlines our plan to drive equality for LGBTIQA+ communities over the next 10 years.

Rainbow Advisory Committee

The Rainbow Advisory Committee advises the Council on issues and barriers to equality affecting people in the City of Casey who identify as LGBTIQA+. 

The Committee is composed of members from the community who identify as LGBTIQA+ or represent local organisations, businesses and networks that support Casey’s LGBTIQA+ community.

Victorian Pride Centre maintains a comprehensive online resource directory that contains information about LGBTIQA+ focused services, organisations, and community groups in Melbourne. Search results can also be filtered by an area.

Celebrating our LGBTIQA+ communities

City of Casey recognises International Day Against LGBTIQA+ Discrimination (IDAHOBIT). Acknowledged in over 60 countries, IDAHOBIT is an annual event celebrated on 17 May, the date when the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 1990.

IDAHOBIT aims to raise awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBTI rights work.

Council also flies various LGBTIQA+ flags at Bunjil Place to mark various days of significance for the LGBTIQA+ communities.

Council has proudly participated in the annual Midsumma Pride March and Midsumma Carnival events.
