Grade 3 to 6: Education for sustainability

Activities

Wetland biodiversity

  • Go on a train ride to the wetlands, home to a variety of native wildlife and flora including the threatened Grey-headed Flying Fox colony.
  • Find out how human activities can impact waterway health and examine the biodiversity of the wetlands through a waterbug netting activity

Gardening for Sustainability

  • Visit the farm’s “Wildlife Garden” before exploring the farms extensive community vegetable gardens.
  • Learn how to grow veggies at home and how to support pollinators in the garden through simple actions.
  • Discuss the environmental and health benefits to growing your own food.

Waste and Recycling 

  • Go inside a giant rubbish bin and learn about local recycling processes.
  • Play the waste sorting game!
  • Learn ways to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and brainstorm ideas for repurposing old items.

Green Living (animal nursery)

  • Identify and explore the sustainability features of the Animal Nursery, such as insulation, lighting, and reuse of materials.
  • Hands-on interaction with the animals in the nursery. These may include lambs, goat kids, milking goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and native Australian reptiles.
  • Visit the composting bins and eco cubby to learn more about sustainability initiatives that can be applied at school and at home!

Duration

  • 10:00 am - arrival at the farm and a quick snack break
  • 10:20 am - program commencement
  • Lunch time - 40 minute break
  • 2:20 pm - program ends

Cost

  • $15.50 per student.
  • Adults are free when ratio of adults to students is less than one-to-five. Extra adults: $11.80

Prices include GST.

Each program requires a minimum payment of 18 students, even if fewer than 18 attend.

Maximum group size

For the Grade 3 to 6 program, we can accommodate a maximum of 3 groups with up to 26 students per group.
