The Road Safety Road Rules 2017 | Victorian Legislation defines long or heavy vehicles as those weighing over 4.5 tonnes or exceeding 7.5 metres.
Long or heavy vehicles parked on private property require a permit.
Vehicle types that may be deemed long or heavy include:
- Caravans or RVs (recreational vehicles)
- Motorhomes
- Mobile homes
- Trailers
- Horse floats
- Trucks
- Buses
Note: In most cases, unhitched caravans and trailers will never exceed the dimensions or weight required to be deemed long or heavy.

Apply for a permit
- Once off application, the fee is $150 (non-refundable)
- The yearly long or heavy vehicle permit fee is $473 (for one vehicle on private land only)
You must pay both the application and permit fee when you apply. We will refund the permit fee of $473 if your application is unsuccessful.

What happens next
- We will inform your neighbours that you wish to keep a large vehicle in a residential area.
- We will inspect the area where you plan to keep your vehicle.
- We will refund the permit fee of $473 if your application is unsuccessful.
- You must renew your permit fee of $473 every year.
