Expressions of Interest are opening soon for an online exhibition that will reflect the extra time we are all spending at home due to the coronavirus. Casey Arts are calling for visual artists, writers, filmmakers—artists of all mediums—to apply to be involved via work that reflects experiences of growing up, living and making in the suburbs.
The works chosen for this show will shine a light on the sentimentality of the geographical locations we know and love: gardens, lounge-rooms, duck ponds, fish and chip shops and all the other places that can only be found in the little nooks of suburban areas. These places and the people we meet there, play a role in forming our identity, and for many of us, this informs our art practice and style of work. If you are someone who has grown up in the suburbs, why not be a part of the collective narrative that is Sentiments of Suburbia.
Organisers are encouraging people to apply early to be a part of the exhibition and start making their artworks now during the coronavirus restrictions. All artworks will add something valuable to this narrative so, no matter your preferred medium or whether you consider yourself a ‘traditional’ or ‘contemporary’ artist, you are encouraged to photograph your work and apply. The exhibition will be presented in the format of a virtual gallery, with the potential for a physical version once social-distancing measures are reduced in scope.
Expressions of Interest are open to anyone who is living or has lived in the City of Casey or in the south eastern suburbs, or who have a connection to the area. Applications open Monday 4 May 2020 and close on Monday, 1 June.
The virtual gallery will go live on Saturday, 4 July 2020. To apply, please submit a maximum of one application for a work you want to show in the exhibition by submitting this online form.
