Stay warm, but don't smoke your neighbours out

Fire place

Smoke from wood heaters and fireplaces can pollute the air and be harmful to our health.

Buying the right wood heater, using it correctly and maintaining it well can help reduce wood smoke pollution.

Hera are some handy tips:

  • Use dry and seasoned timber to ensure a clean hot burn with minimal smoke.
  • Have the flue cleaned. A build-up of soot can cause fires in the flue and this will affect air flow, causing smoky fires.
  • Avoid overloading the heater or shutting off the air intake as it will cause excessive smoke.

If you are affected by smoke from a wood heater, speak to your neighbour first as they may not be aware of the problem.
