September is Biodiversity Month - a time to honour the richness of our natural world and the variety of life it supports.
To mark the occasion, the City of Casey is teaming up with neighbouring councils in south-east Melbourne for the 2025 Biodiversity Blitz - a friendly competition to see which council can log the highest number of plant and animal species between Sunday 1 September and Monday 30 September.
Getting involved is easy: head outside, take photos of the plants and animals you see around you, and upload your sightings to iNaturalist throughout September. Your contributions will be automatically included in the competition tally.

In addition to the Blitz, the City of Casey will be hosting and supporting a range of events and activities throughout the month, offering residents opportunities to deepen their understanding of the local environment. Explore what’s on below:

Royal Botanical Gardens Cranbourne
Nature journaling is a mindful practice that combines drawing and writing to deepen your connection with the natural world. By observing and recording details in nature, you’ll sharpen your ability to identify species, understand their habitats, and appreciate the intricacies of ecosystems.Over time, this practice enhances your skills in observation, illustration, and storytelling. More than just a creative outlet, nature journaling invites quiet reflection and offers a calming escape - supporting mental wellbeing through time spent in nature.

- Threatened species event

What's happening:
- Scenic train ride to the wetlands to meet the incredible Grey-Headed Flying Foxes up close
- Cake decorating fun for the Threatened Species Bake Off – bring your own cake or cupcake to decorate and take home! Please advise us of any allergy concerns prior to the event.
- Wildlife discovery walk - learn about the threatened species living right in our local area
A $2 cash donation is required for entry, payable on the day. Registration is essential.

Join us in marking a fantastic milestone - Doveton Show turns 20! Casey’s Sustainability and Environment team is excited to be part of the celebrations once again.Drop by for fun, family-friendly activities and pick up your Eco Passport. Discover fascinating facts about the Grey-headed Flying Fox, chat with our passionate Gardens for Wildlife volunteers, and don’t forget to take home a free plant to grow your own little piece of nature.

Mushrooms play a vital role in our environment, and we’re inviting curious minds to come explore why! In this hands-on workshop, kids will dive into the amazing world of fungi.We’ll uncover:
- The different parts of a mushroom
- What they look like
- Where they grow
- What they need to survive
- And who eats them!
Then, get creative and craft your own mini mushroom garden using air-dry clay.
Please note: Art and craft activities can get messy! We recommend wearing old clothes or bringing an art shirt.
