A message from the Mayor Stefan Koomen

mayor with find a penny volunteers

As we approach the festive season, I’d like to reflect on the importance of community, generosity, and caring for those in need. Christmas is a time to celebrate, but it is also a time to think of others – especially those who may be facing food insecurity or hardship.

Council continues to invest in the local organisations providing meals, food relief, and essential support to residents in need. This year, we have delivered $138,000 in grants to community groups on the front line of this work. These grants supported 45 groups across Casey to deliver food relief to our most vulnerable community members.

Earlier this year, we awarded a $200,000 grant per annum for two years to support Transit Soup Kitchen and Food Support to develop a collaborative, innovative and high-impact model of food relief that involves a wide range of community services.

We have also supported two key initiatives that help strengthen food security across the municipality. Council led and facilitated a series of round tables that bought together food relief providers to improve collaboration, coordination and service integration. In addition, Council issued a planning permit for Bk2Basics, ensuring the organisation could continue operating and providing essential support services.

Alongside these Council-led action, several food relief organisations were welcomed to Casey including the arrival of OzHarvest, the new Vinnies Soup Van Regional Hub and the opening of Manna 4 Life’s meals and support centre in Hallam.

Recently, I also had the privilege to meet the team from the Find a Penny charity in Hampton Park who deliver hot meals, provide groceries and support residents in crisis. Their work, along with other charity groups, plays a vital role in building a connected and healthy Casey community.

During this season, we encourage residents to consider donating their time, resources, or financial support to local food relief initiatives. Whether contributing a hamper, volunteering at a meal program or supporting a local charity, we can all make a huge difference.
