The City of Casey proudly hosted the Beyond the Binary: Stories from Our Community event at Bunjil Place, Narre Warren, on Saturday, 15 November, as part of Transgender Awareness Week.
This free event created a safe and welcoming space for transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary community members to share their stories, connect with others, and access local support services. Through powerful storytelling sessions and meaningful conversations, attendees explored themes of representation, inclusion, and visibility - reinforcing the message that everyone deserves to live proudly and authentically.
A highlight of the day was the inaugural raising of the Transgender Flag, symbolising pride, courage, and the City of Casey’s ongoing commitment to building a community grounded in respect and inclusion.
Mayor Cr Stefan Koomen, along with Cr Anthony Walter, Cr Carolyn Eaves, and Cr Kim Ross, attended the event to show their support of Council’s Rainbow Action Plan, which guides initiatives that foster diversity and inclusion across Casey.
Mayor Cr Stefan Koomen said: “Beyond the Binary was an important event for our Transgender, Gender Diverse and Non-Binary community, helping raise awareness and understanding across Casey. I was proud to take part in the first-ever raising of the Transgender Flag at Bunjil Place - a powerful symbol of progress and inclusion. It was also fantastic to see local support services on hand, ensuring people know where to turn for connection and assistance.”
The City of Casey thanks all speakers, attendees, and partners who contributed to making Beyond the Binary a success. By hosting events like this, Council continues to deliver on its commitment to inclusion, safety and leadership for all members of the community.
